Cross Iron Mills Mall

Although the kids had the week off school, Tim and I still had to work after the Easter long weekend. However, one of his work days involved a visit to the U of Calgary's new veterinary school, so I took Thursday off.

The department secretary had just spent her Easter weekend at the new mall north of Calgary. I make it a principle to avoid malls in general, and big, new, fancy schmancy malls even more. However, her description of the bizarro land that is the Bass Pro Shop raised my curiousity. It had to be satisfied.  And Trish agreed: "You've got to see it to believe it, Sophe!"

It was all they said and more. First and last, for the sheer number of stuffed animals in non-threatening positions:

Somehow, the animals perched jovially about the merchandise seem to add insult to injury to their furry remains. Seriously, how is this poor thing supposed to encourage me to buy footwear?

But hey - only two quarters, you can feel like a hillbilly! (or perhaps just an Albertan)

hillbilly moment

It would be remiss of me to fail to mention such things as float planes dangling from the ceiling. I am told that this Canadian version pales in comparison to the US versions, which probably have an entire squadron of these AND a lake for them to land them in.

The rest of the mall (at least, that which we had time to see) was equally entertaining.  The Fossil Neighborhood features a faux (I hope) primitive man encased in ice. Complete with a latte. And a murse, complete with home decor items and a nifty prey motif.

Murse

The cowboy neighborhood (I assume) has spooky cowboys looming everywhere. This is but one.

Still, it was a very fun place to go with Trish and the girls, and not to be missed by any visitor to Calgary, just so you can say you saw it, at least once. I kind of have to go back, because we had to leave fairly quickly to pick Tim up from his meeting. I am sure there were yet more exciting neighborhoods awaiting!
